I worked with Margie Ghiz in the Midnight Special Bookstore collective when the bookstore was at 1335 1/2 West Washington Boulevard (now renamed Abbot Kinney Boulevard). Then, as well as later after the bookstore moved to the Santa Monica Mall, Margie was a strong spirit of positive change. There will be a memorial service this Sat March 12 at 2 pm at the Church in Ocean Park, 235 Hill Street, Santa Monica.
April 16, 1940 – February 27, 2016 Lifelong revolutionary and activist, Margie Ghiz, passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Margie spent her entire life fighting for social justice and equal rights for all working class and under-represented people. Her 40 years as first volunteer, and eventually owner and operator of the Midnight Special Bookstore are characterized by her passion and singular commitment to educating and empowering people. Margie was a force of nature, and much like the light of the Midnight Special, her light still shines on in the faces and actions of all the people she encountered along her journey. Margie is survived by her sister, Geri; her son, Ian; her nieces, Fanny and Sofie; and the thousands of people she taught and learned from. A service will be held at the Church in Ocean Park at 235 Hill Street in Santa Monica on Saturday, March 12, at 2pm. Please join us in celebrating her life.
