City Lights Hymn to The Homeless

City Lights
Hymn to The Homeless
by Suzzane Verdal

Being poor: The Crime
City-wide Penal Colony.
Heaving sighs,
Or eyes left dry
By many tears
We feast on crumbs
From rusty dumpsters
Or stranger tables.
From shopping carts
And cardboard boxes,
By hooligans
In uniform.
Even squirrels
And squaby possums
Run for cover.
Come out
From hiding.
Upsmack the heads
Of grinning scoundrels!
Oh pagans
And lovers of Jesus,
Carry the SHIFT
For a sense
Of reason!
